Overview
This policy explains what information Koh Chang Community collects, how it is used, and your choices. "We" and "us" means the company named at the end of this policy, the controller of your data. We aim to collect only what the app needs to work.
What we collect
Account details from your sign-in (name, email, profile photo); your profile and interests; content you post and messages you send; business pages and listings you create; basic usage and device data, including the searches you make in the app; and crash reports. If you allow location access, your precise location is used on your device to centre the map and sort places near you, and is sent to Google Maps and Google Weather as coordinates; we do not store it, except that when you claim a business page we record the phone number you enter and your location at the moment of the claim, to check that the claim is made on the island. A business that starts an ad gives us its invoice details (name, postal address, invoice email and tax ID, if any).
How we use it
To provide and improve the app. Showing the directory, enabling chat, sending notifications you opt into, keeping the community safe, and invoicing businesses for their ads. Nothing is sold inside the app.
Ads
Businesses can pay to show their page first in some places in the app, to show one of their Marketplace listings first in the Marketplace, and to show one of their own posts in the Social feed. Everything paid for is marked Ad.
Which ad post you see in the Social feed is chosen on your phone, from what you do in the app: what you search for, the kinds of place you open, places you follow or save, your location if you have allowed location access, and the time of day. This stays on your phone. It is not sent to us or to any business. A listing is shown first in the Marketplace by its category and by the words you search for there.
A business sees only totals for its own ads: how many people saw them, how many clicked, and what that cost. It never sees who you are or what you did.
An ad post can carry a Call now button. Clicking it opens your phone's dialler with the business's number; the call is between you and the business.
The menu on every ad post says why you are seeing it and lets you hide it.
Service providers
We use trusted providers to run the app, including Google Firebase (authentication, database, storage, messaging, crash reporting), Google Maps and Google Weather (the map and the forecast), YouTube (when a post shares a YouTube video, its picture and title come from YouTube, and playing it opens YouTube), a third-party AI provider (for AI-assisted features such as search and moderation), and Meta (to measure our adverts, below). They process data only to provide their service.
Our adverts on Facebook and Instagram
We advertise Koh Chang Community on Facebook and Instagram. To know which adverts bring people to the app and the website, we tell Meta Platforms (the company behind Facebook and Instagram) a few things.
In the app: that the app was opened (which is how an install is counted), that an account was created and with which sign-in, and that someone sent a first message to a business, submitted a review or published a post. These events never include your name, email, messages, reviews, posts or which business. Your device's advertising identifier is sent with them only if you allow it: on iPhone the app asks once, and if you say no, Meta gets no identifier. On Android you can reset or delete the advertising identifier at any time in your phone's settings.
On kohchang.ai: the Meta Pixel, a small script that uses cookies, records which pages are viewed, which business page is opened, and when an App Store or Google Play link is followed.
Meta uses this to measure and improve our adverts and may combine it with what it already knows about your Facebook or Instagram account, under its own policy (facebook.com/privacy/policy). You can control how Meta uses it for adverts in your Facebook or Instagram ad settings, and block cookies in your browser.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. Content you choose to post or send is visible to the people it is shared with. Posts in Social and listings in the marketplace are public: anyone, including us, can share a link to them outside the app, for example on Facebook, and the link's preview shows the words and the first photo, never your name or profile photo. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of the community.
While you have the app open, other members can see that you are online, and when you were last active. You can turn this off in Settings (Show when I'm active), and then nobody sees either.
In a chat, the other people in it see when you are typing, and in a one-to-one chat, when you have seen their messages.
Your agreement to our Terms
Each time you agree to our Terms of Service (when you create an account, when the Terms change, and when you tick the rules before posting a written review) we keep a record of it: your account, name and email, which version you agreed to, the date and time, the IP address you were using, and your device, app version and language. We keep it to show what was agreed if there is ever a dispute or a legal claim about the app or what was posted on it.
Your rights and deleting your data
You can edit your profile any time, and delete your account and associated data from the account settings. You may request access to or deletion of your data by contacting us. We keep data only as long as needed to provide the app or as required by law. The one exception is the record of your agreement to our Terms: we keep it for three years after you delete your account, in case it is needed for a legal claim, and then delete it.
